Steve Gilliard
We have lost Steve Gilliard.
I didn't know him, in person or otherwise, but I have admired his work for some time. He was one of the early "front pagers" at Daily Kos, and when he left there to start The News Blog, he independently established himself as one of the defining voices of the "progressive blogosphere".
There are many tributes to him on the net tonight, and many descriptions of his unique contributions to the noble work of not only informing people about events, but encouraging them to think about them in penetrating ways. Jane Hamsher at Firedoglake has written a fine one, as has Sara at Orcinus. As Sara says, Gilliard is simply irreplaceable.
The News Blog is dark tonight, but archives going back to 2003 are still online at his old place.
